How to start your Yoga & Pilates Journey

If you’re new to the world of Yoga and Pilates, but have always wanted to dip your toe in to get started, then in our blog this week, we’re going to be looking at how to get started. Sometimes the idea of actually beginning can feel overwhelming which often holds us back. So let’s look at some simple steps to get you on your way to experiencing the benefits this popular combo can have on our mindset and our bodies.

Before you Begin…

Step 1: Set Your Intentions

Before rolling out your mat, it's essential to set clear intentions for your Yoga and Pilates journey. What do you hope to achieve? Are you looking to improve flexibility, strengthen your core, or find a sense of calm amidst the chaos of daily life? By clarifying your goals, you'll have a better understanding of what you want to accomplish on and off the mat.

Step 2: Choose Your Practice

Yoga and Pilates encompass various styles and techniques. Yoga, for instance, offers practices like Vinyasa, Hatha, and Kundalini, each with its unique focus and intensity. Pilates includes mat exercises and equipment-based workouts. Explore these options to find the practice that resonates with you. If you're a beginner, consider starting with a gentle or beginner's class.

Step 3: Create a Welcoming Space

Select a quiet, clutter-free area in your home where you can practice without distractions. Ensure your space is well-lit and ventilated. Invest in a Yoga mat and any necessary props like blocks and straps for Yoga or perhaps some light dumbbells for your Pilates sessions.

Step 4: Begin with the Basics

Starting slowly and mindfully is key. Begin with foundational poses and exercises that build strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Online tutorials, classes, or at the studio, a teacher can guide you through the basics. Remember, it's perfectly normal to experience challenges as you begin your practice, so be patient with yourself. It took me a whole year of practice to get the Vinyasa properly (popular transition you’ll find in a yoga class).

Benefits Beyond the Mat

If you’re wondering why you should start, well, the benefits of Yoga and Pilates extend far beyond just physical fitness. Here's how these practices can enhance various aspects of your life:

1. Improved Flexibility: Regular practice can increase your range of motion and prevent injury in daily activities.

2. Enhanced Strength: Both Yoga and Pilates engage multiple muscle groups, promoting overall body strength.

3. Stress Reduction: Mindfulness and breath control in these practices reduce stress and anxiety levels.

4. Better Posture: Yoga and Pilates emphasise core strength and body awareness, leading to improved posture.

5. Mental Clarity: Meditation and mindfulness practices enhance concentration and mental clarity.

6. Increased Energy: These practices boost circulation and oxygenate the body, leaving you feeling more energized.

7. Enhanced Sleep: Improved relaxation and reduced stress can lead to better sleep quality.

How to Begin Incorporating Yoga and Pilates Into Your Routine

Consistency is key to reaping the full benefits of Yoga and Pilates. Here's how to make these practices a regular part of your life:

1. Set a Schedule: Dedicate specific times each week to your practice, even if it's just a few minutes a day.

2. Variety Matters: Keep your practice exciting by exploring different styles and classes.

3. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to your body's cues, and modify poses or exercises as needed.

4. Stay Mindful: Bring mindfulness from the mat into your daily life. Practice deep breathing during stressful moments.

5. Seek Support: Join a local class or an online community like Sculpt & Flow to connect with like-minded individuals who share your wellness journey.

6. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge your progress and celebrate even the tiniest achievements.

If you’re ready to start, what 5 minute action can you take after reading this to get you on your way to becoming a regular yogi?
