How to beat the Summer Blues

As we approach the end of the summer holidays, many of us find ourselves facing an all-too-familiar challenge: the summer slump. With the change of seasons comes a shift in energy, routine, and often, motivation. The once-vivid goals and wellness plans that felt so achievable amidst the sunshine and relaxation can suddenly seem distant and elusive. With September around the corner and work alongside routine back in full swing, sometimes our wellness can take a step back. So how can we instead use this change of season to our advantage and feel motivated to take our wellness journey to the next step?

Understanding the Hurdles: Why does motivation often dwindle after summer? The reasons are as diverse as the shades of autumn leaves. Some might feel overwhelmed by the demands of work and family, while others might face a lack of routine that hinders healthy habits. The post-summer blues can also stem from body image concerns or feeling disconnected from wellness goals. Recognising these hurdles is the first step to overcoming them. Take time with your journal and write down how you feel about the summer holidays ending? What worked well in your wellness journey over the warmer months and work didn’t work so well? What would you like to achieve next? How can you build on your progress?

Embrace the change: Use this time as a chance to get back into a routine which you may have lost over the summer. With kids going back to school and holidays out of the way, perhaps you have more structure to your day now. How can you use this to your advantage? Can you tie in some mundane tasks you know you have to do with habits that support your wellness goals? Perhaps that looks like adapting the time you workout as well as the location, changing your walking routes to work around your working schedule and the school run? How can you now adapt and change for the better?

Start something new to help you feel refreshed: Maybe now is a time to start a new programme to help you feel that new buzz of energy again, or join a club with a supportive community to keep you going. Find something you know you’ll enjoy so that the feeling of dread that comes with that workout isn’t there. Believe it or not you don’t have to punish yourself with gruelling long workouts, I noticed the biggest change in my own health journey when I switched for low impact enjoyable exercises that nourished both my mind and my body.
